Brothers' new engine set to test V8 dominance

A piece of trick Kiwi ingenuity right here in Wanganui is primed to give jetsprinting brothers Peter and Garry Huijs a serious edge on the water.
The Huijs brothers teamed up with Pulse Performance engine builder Warren Overton to design and build a revolutionary rotary quad turbo engine they say will seriously test the massive V8s that traditionally dominate the top end jetsprint competition.
"This design has never been used in a jetsprint and very few have been developed in the world. We had it on the water in the Whanganui River on Tuesday night and woke up a few people. Everything went beautifully," Peter Huijs said.
"The design is already creating interest worldwide and is the talk of New Zealand. The motor is much lighter than the huge V8s the other boats are usually powered by and it allows a far lower centre of gravity. The theory is that will give us far greater manoeuvrability on the water. It also gives us a huge power to weight ratio advantage," Huijs said.
Team Ginza Bargains, named after the family business, will further test the revolutionary design at the Upokongaro Jetsprint course today, during a test and tune day.
The 935-horsepower motor means the brothers can hit speeds of up to 140km/h in under two seconds.
Peter Huijs is no stranger to adrenalin rushes, having raced Midgets and Sprinters in speedway competition successfully for years, but says the jetsprint provides a new level of excitement.
"When you hit the corners in this boat there are serious G-forces to contend with. This is pretty intense stuff - short, but intense," Huijs said.
