Rotorua's Jennifer Minty realised performing on stage wasn't for her - but that didn't stop her getting involved in the theatre.
Ms Minty has been in theatre for about 20 years and although she has tried being on stage twice, she found her niche backstage.
She says there may be others
like her.
Rotorua Musical Theatre is getting ready for its first show of the year, Ladies of the Night, and is holding auditions for the production on Sunday.
Director Jan Beets said Ladies of the Night, which will run between May 1 and 16 at the Casa Blanca Theatre, would feature "songs for the night, to the night, about the night and sung by ladies of the night". It would include rock, country and ballads, she said.
She said she was after eight women singers, four women dancers and three men who could sing. None had to be experienced performers. However, if she found 12 women who could sing, she would use them all.
She wanted to see as many as possible auditioning, even if all they wanted was experience with auditions.
"I want everybody to come along and have a go," Mrs Beets said.
Ms Minty, who is production secretary, said they were encouraging as many people as possible to try out and urged anyone new to theatre not to be scared.
"We're looking for new people, young people who would like to give it a try," she said.
"It's only two minutes of your life, just give it a go."
Ms Minty realised that some people, like her, were keen to be involved with theatre but weren't as keen to be in the spotlight. If that was the case, they were also looking for extra hands backstage, she said.
"We need people to audition but we also need people backstage ... people who want to learn a new skill," Ms Minty said.
She said theatre gave people the opportunity "to do something that's a bit different to your everyday day life".
"We really do have a lot of fun, there's something special about the theatre."
Dance auditions will be held between 1pm and 2pm and the singing auditions will take place between 2pm and 5pm.
Hopefuls will need to prepare a song with their own backing CD.
Mrs Beets said the music could be anything from rock to jazz because she just wanted to hear them sing.
INTERESTED? Dance auditions are on Sunday, 1pm-2pm.
