Search is on to find new airport chief

The search is on for innovative person to lead Rotorua's airport into the future.

With Rotorua International Airport chief executive George White leaving to take up a role with Polynesian Spa in February the Rotorua District Council is looking for his replacement.

Mr White's last day is February 7 and during his time at the airport he has overseen the development and commencement of trans-Tasman services, providing an international link to Sydney, Australia.

"Rotorua International Airport has a solid reputation of being very creative, with a dedicated team committed to the airport's future success.

"This loyal team will be a tremendous support to the new chief executive,'' Mr White said.

Rotorua International Airport chairman Ray Cook said the airport was a significant infrastructural asset for Rotorua and the wider Bay of Plenty/Waikato regions.

"It is essential that the new chief executive has an innovative management approach and strong collaboration skills. The role involves a close working relationships with regional tourism organisations and other airports and airlines so these skills are vital to lift the airport to the next level in its development programme.''

Mr Cook said tough times in the tourism industry also represented a significant challenge, so the new chief executive would need to develop an understanding of tourism flows and their drivers.

He said there had already been strong interest in the position.

"It's a unique opportunity for the right person to help shape the airport's future and its ability to contribute to the region's economic wellbeing,'' Mr Cook said.
