A Rotorua vet and his four-legged patients are gracing television screens around the country - although some of those involved would rather be behind the camera than in front of it.

Vetora vet Dr Stacey Tremain said TVNZ's Vet Tales had been filming at the clinic for about seven months. There would be 10 episodes of the show, with three episodes aired so far.

The show follows Dr Tremain and his vet school friend Dr Mark Young, who is based in Auckland.

Dr Young works with bigger animals such as horses and cattle while I work with smaller animals such as cats and dogs, Dr Tremain said.

It's not Dr Tremain's first taste of small screen stardom - last year he fronted a pet segment on lifestyle show Kiwi Living.

Vet Tales was as much about the people as the animal patients, he said.

Dr Tremain said, when asked to do the show, he thought why not give it a go as it could turn into something special.

"I think it's been really fun, but definitely some of the nurses would rather be behind the camera than in front of it."

Dr Tremain said he had enjoyed getting to meet people in the TV world.

"When you meet someone who is really good at what they do it's inspiring for you too, and you want to do better in what you do."

The film crew would come to the clinic for short bursts at a time and whatever came in during that week was what they shot, he said.

He said it was a bit weird seeing himself on TV but he thought we were our own worst critics.

"The kids get a bit of a buzz, they're allowed to stay up and watch it."

He said an episode with a tortoise was coming up. In the past he had studied herpetology - the study of reptiles - which he thought he would never use so it was nice to use those skills again.

He said the clinic's clients had been great with the filming.

"To be honest we couldn't be more grateful. We've got some pretty cool clients and are lucky to have them."

Dr Tremain said, from a Rotorua perspective, there had been beautiful footage shot of the city in general and it was neat the show was not all based in Auckland.

Client Debbie Woodmass and her 6-year-old Labrador Bear will feature on the show shortly showing his advanced knee operation.

She said breakthrough technology was used for the surgery and it was needed due to problems with bone development.

Miss Woodmass said she was nervous about being filmed but the fact it was supporting Dr Tremain and Vetora meant she was more than happy to do it.

She said Bear's portion of the show was coming up in a couple weeks, after having been filmed about four times, including the full crew coming to her home.

"I'm absolutely rapt for Bear but not so sure about seeing myself on TV. I just had to look at the bigger picture."

Miss Woodmass said Dr Tremain had an amazing gift and that he went beyond the call of duty.
