He's won golden gloves for his weight division four years in a row and thanks to Te Arawa Fisheries Ricaia Warren is hoping to make it five.
The Rotovegas Boxing gym member was one of six rangatahi (young people) to receive a $500 Te Arawa Fisheries scholarship.
The 13-year-old said he washonoured and was putting the money towards new training gear.
A Te Arawa descendant who holds boxing titles including a CNI championship, Waikato Championship and four North Island Golden Glove Championship wins, Ricaia said the award had helped him towards his goal of retaining those championships.
"It makes it a lot easier that's for sure."
The Rotorua Boy's High School Year 9 student said he was looking forward to heading to the nationals in Wellington in October when he will look to gain his fifth golden gloves title in the 56kg weight division.
The other five recipients for the 2010 awards were Tuhoto-Ariki Pene, Ngati Rangiwewehi, the Central Region, North Island, Northland, Wellington Champion and five time National BMX Champion; Camden Te Kani-McQueen, Tuhourangi, 2010 Runner up Junior Open Squash National Tournament as well as taking out numerous other regional competitions; Aperahama Hurihanganui, Tuhourangi, Ngati Whakaue, head boy of Rotorua Boys High School 2010, member of the Raukura Kapa Haka which came second at the Secondary School National Competition. Aperahama also came second at the National Manu Korero competition; Oriwa Thyne, Tuhourangi, Ngati Wahiao, Oriwa plays for the midlands U18 and U21 hockey teams and the Maori Women's U21 Teams; and Charlizza Harris, Tuhourangi. Charlizza is a youth advisor at Upper Hutt City Council. She was an organiser of Bouncy Bullys and Stix n Stonz aimed at changing attitudes about bullying, Charlizza was the leader of Nga Hoe Akerautangi Kapa Haka and has spoken at events including the National ALAC Conference.
