Their wives don't like them and even they admit they're pretty hideous - but Kawerau firefighters are growing a mo for a great cause.
New Zealand's month of November now heralds sometimes straggly, often grey or even ginger facial hair with the aim of raising funds and awareness for men's health.
And
Kawerau's paid firefighters have jumped on the bandwagon under the title of "K-Town Lip Slugs".
Borrowing a few skills from New Zealand's Next Top Model, Kawerau's Danielle Hayes, the men in blue have decided to pose for the camera - but hiding their identity while showing off their meagre few days' growth.
K-Town Lip Slugs captain Tom-Mo said despite the image of firefighters commonly having mos, only one firefighter at the station already has hair on his upper lip.
"All the rest of us can't stand growing moustaches," Tom-Mo said.
"Our wives can't stand them and half grow grey or ginger - or not at all."
He said his own wife thinks he looks like a 1980s South African policeman when he has a mo.
"We've resigned ourselves to a month of enforced celibacy or sleeping in the shed - the growth results so far are truly hideous."
However, Tom-Mo says it is for an important cause, so the more money raised the better.
He added some of the crew of 11 taking on Movember were happy to pose for a photo outside the station to prove to the public not all professional firemen should be in a calendar shoot and that firefighter and ugly can be used in the same sentence.
Unfortunately, the growth to date was so pathetic the firemen chose to cover up the fluff in the hope of having lustrous lip locks to boast at the end of the 30 days.
At the end of the month the 11 firefighters will be publicly shaved in or around Kawerau's New World Supermarket in an effort to add to the fundraising total. The Eastern Bay News will reveal the firefighters at the time of shaving.
But for now we can only give you their Movember aliases, Cam-Mo, Up-to-Mo-Good, Mo-Jo, Dyna-Mo, Sandy-Mo, Rad-Mo, Mo-uri-ora, S-Mo-ker, Mo-Town and Nga-Mo. The K-Town Lip Slugs are a registered Movember team and donations can be made on the official Movember website at Movember.com.
MOVEMBER FACTS
- Movember is now in its fifth year in New Zealand. The Cancer Society receives 50 per cent of money raised.
- The remaining 50 per cent goes to the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.
- Men taking part in Movember are known as Mo Bros while supporting women are Mo Sistas.
