Dancehall reggae superstar Sean Paul is heading to Rotorua and he may even give residents a bit of a Jamaican-themed dancing lesson while he's here.
Sean Paul Ryan Francis Henriques, commonly known as Sean Paul, is from Kingston, Jamaica.
He is one of the international artists who will perform at the Rotorua
International Stadium on February 5 as part of the Raggamuffin 2011 line-up.
Other international artists performing at the fourth Raggamuffin festival include headliner Mary J Blige, Jimmy Cliff, Maxi Priest, The Original Wailers and Ky-Mani Marley.
The local acts include Che Fu and the Krates, Salmonella Dub, Nesian Mystik, 1814 and Sons of Zion.
Although Paul did not know anything about New Zealand other than "people use New Zealand for movies a lot" and it was "far away", he searched for our small country on Google Earth while talking to The Daily Post.
He is looking forward to being part of the Raggamuffin line-up in Rotorua and is promising a high energy performance when he hits the stage, and is excited to be part of the festival.
"I just know that there's a lot of people talking about Raggamuffin festival," Paul said.
"It's just going to be a great event."
Paul, who has been in the music industry for 16 years, says although a lot of his music is full of energy he does "slow it down" at times.
When Paul holds his own concerts he usually performs a 90-minute show in front of a crowd of 10,000 people.
Although his Raggamuffin set would be less time he says he will "cram everything in" to make sure people get everything they would at his own show.
The Grammy Award winner has worked with artists such as Beyonce on Baby Boy, Rihanna on Break It Off and Estelle on Come on Over. Some of his more popular hit singles include Temperature, We Be Burnin', Gimme the Light and Like Glue.
He is well-known for his Jamaican-styled dancing on his music videos and says he may even teach a few moves to the Raggamuffin crowd next month.
Paul was now working on his new album but he said Raggamuffin-goers would be performing all his new and old songs.
Although Paul will be busy getting ready to perform in front of thousands of people, he planned to "try and check out the sites".
"Whatever there is to check out I'll definitely try to do on my off days.
"Life is short so we need to take time for ourselves but we also need to take time out to party."
