News a suspicious man has been loitering around Rotorua's Redwoods is no doubt concerning, particularly to women who go to the forest alone.<
But as police rightly say, the Redwoods has never been a dangerous place and locals and tourists shouldn't be put off going there. They say it is still a safe place to visit.<
The Daily Post reported on Saturday that a man has been acting oddly in our favourite recreational spot.<
The man, described as European, of muscular build and about 176cm tall, has been spotted by several women in The Redwoods during the past few months.<
His actions have resulted in police charging him with intimidation and issuing trespass orders to ensure he stays away from the forest.<
Women spoken to by our newspaper told us the man carries out odd acts, such as "karate chops" and "press ups" in front of women as well as invades their personal space by "ranting" about why women supposedly think they are better than men.<
Sergeant Malcolm Collins said although the man's actions were certainly suspicious, he hadn't actually physically done anything to the women. So what do we do about it? Does this mean we shouldn't frequent what is undoubtedly a favourite place for some?<
We shouldn't let this character put us off. The Redwoods is a safe place. But if you're unsure, why not go with a friend, a dog or leave your name at the Visitor Centre on Long Mile Rd - as suggested by centre manager Julianne Wilkinson. It's also a good idea to stick to busy times, such as after 4pm and in weekends.<
But most importantly, if you see a man fitting his description, ring the police immediately.<
