Opotiki mouth-painting artist Kerrin Tilley has claimed a sought-after highly commended award at the Rural Queensland Show in Brisbane.
Having his artwork selected for the show was honour enough for Kerrin, who hoped that visitors to the show would recognise the unique skills involved in mouth painting. "It's a great feeling
to receive recognition for the time and effort I put into my artwork. It's a great sign I'm on the right track," Tilley said.
Judges described Tilley's water colour representing the sparkling water of the ocean as "a poetic water colour of remarkable technical control".
Tilley is grateful for the support of the community who continue to encourage him.
"It allows us to continue our love for painting, living and working as financially independent artists."
Tilley began mouth painting in 1988 after suffering a neck injury while playing rugby. He has been a member of the national Mouth and Foot Painting Artists Society and an Opotiki Society member since 1992.
The Rural Queensland Show runs until August 20.
