Shoppers and diners at the Rotorua Night Market were treated to something a little bit different last night.
As part of the market's second birthday celebrations a flash mob entertained the crowd.
A flash mob is a group of people who gather to do something like a dance or an
action to get reactions from unsuspecting people.
The Night Market's birthday celebration organiser Brigitte Nelson said she arranged the flash mob as a way to demonstrate how fun and vibrant both Rotorua and the Night Market were. She said a group of dedicated participants had been practising for several weeks at Rotorua dance school Amjazz to take part in the flash mob.
Mrs Nelson said she got the idea after seeing several videos of flash mobs on YouTube, one video in particular inspired last night's performance.
"It was done by a group called The Babysitters Circus. It was all about being fun and happy and just enjoying yourself," she said.
"I couldn't see a better way than that to celebrate the Night Market and Rotorua."
John Paul College student Olivia Howard was one of about 70 people who took part in the flash mob.
"It was really cool," she said.
"There was lot of positive energy and I thought the crowd really enjoyed it."
Rotorua resident Sarah Smith was in the crowd watching when the flash mob took place.
"I pop down to the Night Market occasionally for dinner," she said.
"I had no idea this was going to happen but it was really great.
"It looks like they put a lot of effort in."
The market takes place every Thursday night on Tutanekai St between Haupapa St and Pukuatua St with live music and a range of stalls.
Mrs Nelson said the market would continue to be held every Thursday during winter unless it was raining.
