A final bid to have Rotorua war hero Lance Sergeant Haane Manahi recognised with the Victoria Cross medal has failed - but compensation is expected.
Mr Manahi will tomorrow get recognition, but at the moment it is being kept under wraps.
Buckingham Palace has reportedly turned down a final bid
to award a VC, but has agreed to measures to compensate him for missing out on the medal recommended by three generals.
Haane Manahi VC Committee chairman Tony Horton said he had "an idea" of what the compensation would be but wouldn't give further details saying information would be released at a hui at Tamatekapua, Ohinemutu, tomorrow.
It is understood Mr Manahi's advocates believe the agreement more than makes up for the VC snub.
Mr Manahi was recommended for the top bravery award for his feats during a fierce battle for control of a steep ridge in Tunisia, North Africa, in 1943. But the medal was downgraded to a Distinguished Conduct Medal, apparently because another Maori soldier, Lieutenant Moananui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu, received a posthumous VC for his role in a similar action just three weeks earlier.
