New Zealand-born Elwyn Ball had to move to Sydney before getting the opportunity to visit Rotorua.
Mr Ball had never been to Rotorua until last weekend and he was impressed.
"It's fantastic. I'm absolutely loving this place."
Mr Ball, who is from Auckland but has been living in Sydney for the past 18 years, was among 100 Australians to win a trip to Rotorua as part of the Win Your Way to Rotorua online and radio competition.
Mr Ball said he had never visited Rotorua while he lived in New Zealand.
"There was nothing past the Bombays."
Sydney freelance journalist Anna Warwick was among several Australian journalists who joined the 100 who had won the trip and she was heading back yesterday to write an adventure piece for Sydney's Sun Herald.
One of the highlights of the four-day trip was a skydive courtesy of NZONE.
"Jumping out of a plane was on my bucket list. It was just the most beautiful experience. I didn't know whether to cry, laugh or vomit."
Miss Warwick said she jumped from almost 4700m (15,400ft) and she was one of only a few who were given the opportunity to skydive.
"It's just so much fun, it feels like flying."
Miss Warwick spent the four days doing adventure activities. She had nothing but praise for Rotorua.
"I just want to say that Rotorua is spectacular, it's beautiful and [it has] lovely people. Everyone is just so welcoming ... we all just clicked . . . everyone is saying they will be back."
Destination Rotorua Tourism Marketing general manager Don Gunn said the trip was a success and many friendships had been made.
Many had talked about returning to Rotorua. "Some have already talked about having a reunion over here."
