Violinist Rosemary Wilson has made a huge contribution to her school and the community not just in music but in many other areas.
The Year 13 student at Whakatane High School today receives the Daily Post Youth in Excellence Award. She has been described as an outstanding musician, academic, sportswoman and community minded person.
As a Year 11 student Rosemary gained the top academic award after achieving first place in history, French, music and English.
Last year as a Year 12 student she was top in French and music. Her expertise in French has taken her to New Caledonia.
Rosemary plays the violin in the New Zealand Secondary Schools' Orchestra and the Whakatane Community Orchestra.
She is a valued member of the Girls' Chorus which represented the school at regional competitions. She has taken part in several Stage Challenge events both as a dancer and more recently as a wardrobe and props manager.
She plays various sports including soccer, tennis and hockey.
Outside of school Rosemary is a youth leader at Whakatane Baptist Church and a member of the local operatic society.
A highlight for her was attending the Genesis Energy National Science and Technology forum this year. She is working towards a Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.
On top of all of her commitments Rosemary has worked as a waitress for a restaurant in Whakatane during the past two years.
"Rosemary is an outstanding young woman who has exceptional skills in balancing her busy life between her school and extra curricular activities," said principal Chris Day."
She plans to head to Switzerland on a student exchange at the end of the year before heading to Otago University.
