Rotorua is set for a busy Easter weekend, with accommodation nearly full and restaurants and tourism operators expecting plenty of visitors.
Hotels, motels and backpackers expect to be full for the four-day holiday.
Rotorua Motelier Association president Glen Stafford said there were still a few vacancies but they were filling up fast.
"If
people turn up without a booking they might be disappointed."
A number of events had attracted people to Rotorua.
"It's good to have a busy weekend."
While having Easter Weekend combined with the school holidays and Anzac Day had hurt moteliers a little, most were still busy, he said.
New Zealand Hotel Association Rotorua chairman and Novotel and Ibis general manager, Fraser McKenzie, said local hoteliers were excited about the weekend.
"We're looking forward to a busy weekend. Trading over Easter is always a very strong period."
Mr McKenzie said in the current climate, following the earthquakes in Christchurch and Japan, many people wanted to get away for a few days.
"Rotorua is ideal for that. There is so much for families to do."
Backpackers are also looking forward to a busy Easter Weekend. KiwiPaka is fully booked but still fielding calls from people looking for accommodation, according to spokesperson Chenara Liversidge.
"We're going to be jam-packed this weekend."
Rotorua's YHA Hostel is nearly fully booked, according to manager Hayley Bloor, who said there were just a few beds left.
She said it was typical for Easter and was a nice way to end the month.
Bars and restaurants are also expected to be busy.
Triple 1 Five owner John Knight said staff there were preparing for a busy weekend and Kris Beehre, co-owner of Ambrosia Restaurant and Bar, which won't be charging a surcharge, has a number of bookings already.
"It will be pretty busy. It always is over Easter," he said.
Polynesian Spa director Martin Lobb said Easter was the attraction's busiest weekend of the year.
Kiwis considered the four-day weekend their "last fling" before winter, he said.
"It's a nice long break - it's always a good weekend."
