If it always seems to be a "something day" in terms of observance across the land that's because there are indeed a lot of observance days and anniversary days on the
calendar.

Around about 40, give or take.

In strict observance terms it starts with New Year's Day and wraps with Boxing Day, and along the year's path there are events like Anzac Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Waitangi Day, Queen's Birthday, Valentine's Day, White Ribbon Day...and so it goes.

Then there are the anniversary days like our fine region's day which very wisely (and obviously well planned) ties in nicely with Labour Day to create an extra long weekend.

In January alone there are four anniversary days — Auckland, Wellington, Northland and Nelson, and across the first half of the year leading into Queen's Birthday on June 4 there are 19 anniversary or observance days.

However, we here in Godzone are well off the pace in terms of rolling out a reason for an observance day, although of course anything manufactured in the USA in terms of a "worthy cause" has to be taken with a grain of salt.

And yes, they have a Grain of Salt Day.

For the month of July there are 23 "event" days on the appropriately titled "Bizarre and Unique Holidays" calendar.

On July 2 (and I'm not kidding) it was World UFO Day, and yesterday, July 6, was National Fried Chicken Day.

Today, Saturday July 7, is Chocolate Day as well as National Strawberry Sundae Day.

Then on July 27 it is Take Your Pants Walking Day.

Golly, never knew that, did you?

Hopefully not, because yes, there are better things to concentrate on.

So then, I hear you sigh, is that the best, or worst, we can do?

Oh no, because I forgot to mention that today is also International Cherry Pit Spitting Day, according to the US manual of observance days.

I knew there was something else.
