Police are hunting a man who raped a 14-year-old girl as she walked home in Flaxmere early yesterday morning.

Detective Jeff Foley said the girl was walking home from a friend's house shortly after midnight yesterday when a man began following her near the Flaxmere shopping centre.

The man had caught up with the girl near the skatebowl beside the shops, grabbed her from behind and pulled her to the ground, raping her.

Mr Foley said the girl had made her way to her home, which was nearby, and police were called.

"This was a traumatic and frightening incident for this young girl and she is understandably very upset.

"Someone in the community will know who is responsible for this and we need to find him urgently," he said.

The rapist was described as a young male of unknown race. He was tall and skinny and wearing a grey hooded top, black shorts, white socks without shoes and a dark-coloured cap.

Police were keen to speak to anyone who had any information about the incident or the man involved.

"There would have been some traffic around the Flaxmere shopping centre at that time of the night and someone may have seen the girl or the offender walking along the street.

"Someone may have noticed the offender wearing only socks without shoes - that may have attracted someone's attention."

Anyone with information about the incident or the offender should contact Mr Foley on 06 2113711 or information can be left anonymously on the Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.
