Napier Rotary Club president Richard Anderson is living at Clive Square in central Napier this week to raise funds for the purchase of more Rotary International Shelterboxes.
"These boxes are the best idea I've come across for disaster relief," he said of his accommodation. "They fill a gap in the disaster relief machinery and there is very little administration cost because volunteers are used extensively. They cost $1500 each which includes the cost of shipping them wherever in the world they are needed."
Each Shelterbox can supply an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use while displaced or homeless.
The contents were tailored depending on the nature and location of the disaster, with care taken sourcing every item to ensure it was robust enough to be of lasting value.
Each box was numbered so it could be tracked all the way to its recipient country. Response teams distributed boxes on the ground, working with local organisations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide.
So far Mr Anderson reports a comfortable stay with quiet evenings and this morning a surprise complimentary breakfast from the Tennyson Hotel. He is taking donations at Clive Square or they can be made online at fundraiseonline.co.nz/rotaryclubofnapier
