A Napier man was yesterday sentenced to four months in jail, just 12 hours after being caught with two others after unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.
Asked how he pleaded when he appeared in the Napier District Court, Tipene Abraham, 24, told Judge Tony Adeane: "Guilty plea, Your Honour. No micking around."
He also waived a need for a probation report in the interests of getting it out of the way on the day.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Fred van Duuren said Abraham and two others took a Toyota Hi-Lux from Coverdale Street, Onekawa, about 10.30pm on Thursday. They forced open a door and were seen driving away, the sergeant said.
Police spotted the car in Gloucester Street, Greenmeadows, and the trio fled on foot. A dog and handler tracked the offenders and found three young men.
Judge Adeane said Abraham pleaded guilty at a "remarkably early stage" to an offence done with two others who had either no criminal record or "at least" nothing like the "regrettable" record amassed by the defendant.
Duty solicitor Scott Jefferson said Abraham had most recently been in court on other matters on May 4, when he was sentenced to jail.
The alleged co-offenders, Warren Michael Dunn, 19, and a youth, 16, entered no pleas and were remanded on bail to appear in the court again next Wednesday.
