KATE NEWTON
Ten-year-old Henry Taylor [pictured] must have been watching closely when mum was making last year's robot birthday cake.
The year-five pupil was able to recreate it himself for yesterday's ``Fantasy and Faces' cake-decorating competition at Port Ahuriri School, although he admitted it wasn't as easy as mum had made it
look.
``Putting the icing on the circle head was really hard,' Henry said, after winning his year group's category.
The cake was constructed by first making a square cake and chopping it up to make a robot that looked similar to his birthday cake.
``It was cool as,' he said of his mother's efforts. Other cakes judged winners by a panel that included Magpies rugby player Clifton Bush were a swimming pool creation by 7-year-old Liam Procuta - made from sponge cake with a jelly centre and complete with a Tim-Tam diving board - and a castle by 10-year-old Mia Sohgne.
The cake-decorating competition was held as part of Port Ahuriri School's annual Food and Wine Festival fundraiser, where parents were selling their own multicultural food and students put on acts for entertainment.
About 1000 people were expected at the fundraiser.
Money raised will go towards building a playground for the junior part of Napier's oldest school.
