Hastings sculptor Aaldert Verplanke has made a political statement piece that is being exhibited with a couple of his other works at the Wildflower Sculpture Exhibition, Mangaroa, Hastings.
Flemish-born Hastings artist Aaldert Verplanke is lifting the lid on his views on the "irritating" US president in his first political artwork.
Part of the seventh Wildflower Sculpture Exhibition, which starts next week, the interactive artwork depicts his interpretation of the still current US President Donald Trump and is entitled'**ump (pull to view)'.
Verplanke said it was inspired because "the man irritated" him.
"I wanted to do something to irritate him back."
It's not the first time the former-engineer has put forward a piece for the exhibition, having had something on display every year since it started.
He uses a range of materials including Oamaru stone, glass, wood and steel.
This year he would be contributing three pieces, each containing an interactive component.

"If they can interact with it, it stays with them longer than just looking at something."
The '**ump' sculpture is made from totara and features a rope pulley system which is used to uncover the symbol-heavy interpretation of Trump.
Verplanke expected it to stir some controversy, especially as the sculpture exhibition is set to open a week after the US election results are announced.

The biennial spring event features sculptures from about 80 artists around the country, all on display in Mike and Julie Russell's Round Pond Garden, on 125 Rosser Rd, Hastings.
It helps raise funds for Cranford Hospice.
The Wildflower Sculpture Exhibition will run from November 11-15. Tickets are $15 at the gate or online at wildflowersculpture.com
