Even rugby players can get the flu. The influenza virus doesn't care how fit and healthy you are, says Hawke's Bay District Health Board's immunisation co-ordinator Margaret Dalton.
"It's a contagious virus and anyone can catch it."
Mrs Dalton was on hand to vaccinate the Magpies rugby players to help ward off circulating flu strains and keep them match-ready this season.
She said even though the cool weather had already set in it was not too late for other people to get the flu vaccine.
"Influenza is a serious disease that can affect even the most fit and healthy people, and for most people being off work or unable to maintain a fitness programme or get to training is a real problem," Mrs Dalton said.
Influenza was not simply a bad cold. Some of the symptoms were similar, but influenza was more severe and could lead to serious complications.
The influenza vaccine is free to eligible people who are at high risk of complications from influenza, because of their age (being 65 years and over), those under 65 with an ongoing medical condition and pregnant women.
"While it won't protect you from coughs and colds, you will get protection from the more serious circulating flu bugs," Mrs Dalton said.
The vaccine is available from your GP or practice nurse.
