Black Cap cricketer Doug Bracewell says he "stuffed up" after admitting to drink driving at more than three times the legal limit.
The 26 year old has released a statement through his lawyer, after pleading guilty at the Hastings District Court to driving with excess breath alcohol.
The player was pulled over on Clifton Road, in Haumoana near where he lives in March this year, with a breath-alcohol reading of 783...the legal limit is 250.
The maximum penalty for the charge is two years in prison, or a six-thousand dollar fine.
In his statement, Doug Bracewell says "I stuffed up and made an extremely bad call to drive home from a function because of a personal and urgent issue that arose at home".
"I should have made a better call as to how to get home, and didn't. I was just worried and drove. I accept that mistake."
Bracewell says "I also accept that I must account for this error of judgement. I am here to be openly accountable for that error. Hopeful others will think twice in similar circumstances".
"I accept we need to keep our roads safe and I am committed to conduct that ensures that".
The 26 year old player was facing two charges in the Hastings District Court, including drink-driving and careless driving after an incident on the 18th of March this year.
The careless driving charge was withdrawn at today's appearance.
Interim name suppression, which was granted after his first court appearance four weeks ago, was lifted today.
Doug Bracewell has been remanded back on bail, to be sentenced next month.
