The website of the Sensible Sentencing Trust (SST) is back online after a "random" attack by a hacking group based in the Middle East.
Hawke's Bay's Garth McVicar, who has resumed his role as the lobby group's spokesman after he ran as a Conservative Party candidate in last year's election, yesterday referred questions about the hacking to the SST's webmaster, Peter Jenkins.
Mr Jenkins said he believed the site had fallen victim to the Syrian Electronic Army, the hacker group that attacked several media websites, including Stuff.co.nz, last month.
"It's the same people and the same type of hack."
The attack on Stuff.co.nz resulted in a pop-up ad with the text: "You've been hacked by the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA)".
