One man was killed and five people were injured when two cars collided in Hawke's Bay early this morning.
The head on collision happened on State Highway 2 just south of Waipawa, which is 43km southwest of Hastings, about 1.45am, police said.
The driver and sole occupant of the southbound car died at the scene.
All five passengers in the northbound station wagon were taken by ambulance Hawke's Bay Hospital with two suffering serious injuries, two moderate and one minor, a St John Ambulance spokeswoman told NZPA.
It was too early to determine the cause of the crash, but it appeared one of the cars had crossed the centre line, police said.
Police were yet to confirm the dead man's identity.
