Another large quake in Kermadec Trench

A series of large earthquakes in the Kermadec Trench north-east of Napier continued this morning with a 5.1 quake recorded at the shallow depth of 12km.

GNS Science said the quake struck at 8:38am this morning 200km north-east of Gisborne and may have been felt in the Gisborne region.

The latest tremor  follows several earthquakes on Friday and Saturday which ranged from magnitude 4.9 to 6.1.

In July this year a tsunami alert was issued for New Zealand after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck  the Kermadec Islands region.
