Horouta Waka Hoe Club won the Matapihi Trophy for top waka ama club in Aotearoa for the fifth year in a row, and for the seventh time in the eight years it has been contested.

Horouta had 212 paddlers competing in 34 teams and/or as individuals in the Waka Ama Sprint Nationals at Lake Karapiro last month.

Their team members won 16 gold medals, 17 silver and nine bronze, and amassed 418 points.

The next four clubs were Manukau Outrigger Canoe Club (154 points), Ruamata Waka Ama Club (145) and Mareikura Waka Ama Club (133).

Horouta held a club celebration barbecue at the Olympic Pool complex on Monday, above, and many members will now focus on the world sprint championships in Tahiti in July.
