THE Gisborne International Music Competition is not just a contest. Entrants also see it as a learning opportunity and a way to beef up their credentials before they hit the world of professional musicianship.
“But engaging with the community is really important, too,” says Mark La Roche, manager of the
contest being held in Gisborne this week.
“And though they might have travelled for days to get here, entrants are always tremendously generous about sharing their skills and their time.”
With yesterday being an “off day” from competition, entrants scattered into the community, squeezing school visits and public recitals in with their own post-performance feedback sessions and, for some, a stress-busting surfing lesson.
