Dr Peter Gilling

Dr Peter Gilling

Tauranga urologist Peter Gilling has been officially ranked as a world expert in his field.

A company which specialises in ranking the most knowledgeable and experienced doctors has listed Dr Gilling as one of the world's top ten experts in the research and treatment of prostatic enlargement, also known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

Dr Gilling, who is an associate professor of surgery at the University of Auckland and head of the Bay of Plenty District Health Board's Clinical School in Tauranga, is sixth on the list.

He is the sole Southern Hemisphere doctor to feature and is kept company high in the rankings by Doctors from New York, Texas, Illinois, Amsterdam, London and Vienna.

Listed next to his name on the prestigious list is Tauranga's Grace Hospital where his private surgical practice includes state-of-the-art robotic surgery.

Tauranga Hospital, where he also works, ranks 47th in the world list of top institutions treating BPH - one place ahead of Massachusetts General in Boston.

The ranking has been conducted by Expertscape as part of a continuing programme to highlight expertise and excellence in healthcare.

The company analysed information regarding prostatic enlargement - a common problem for men aged over 60.

Dr Gilling and his urology colleagues believed with proper diagnosis and early treatment more serious complications can be avoided, such as urinary tract infections, bladder stones, and kidney and bladder damage.

Expertscape managing partner Brendan McAdams said being rated so highly in a medical specialty was "a significant and notable accomplishment".

Dr Gilling is already internationally renowned. He, and Urology BOP Ltd colleague Mark Fraundorfer, have long been extensively involved in international urology research and have developed surgical laser techniques now widely used throughout the world.

He is also recognised as a leading specialist in the treatment of other urological conditions including not only BPH and Prostate Cancer but also male and female incontinence and sexual dysfunction.

He is renowned for his robotic, laser and laparoscopic surgery and cryotherapy of the kidney.

Over the years he has received numerous post graduate awards and fellowships; been involved in many educational and clinical appointments; and held a host of positions on advisory panels and committees.

In 2011 he was awarded an MD from the University of Otago for his BPH work, to add to his MBChB and FRACS.

The recent top-in-the-world accolade comes at a significant time for Dr Gilling. In July he and business partner and Tauranga Dental Specialist Kevin Tims, will open a new multi-disciplinary clinic in the complex, to be known as 850 Cameron, under construction opposite Tauranga Hospital.

Called Virtuoso, the clinic will specialise in minimally invasive techniques and state-of-the-art procedures. It will offer a unique mix of specialist services including Dental, Urology, Gynaecology and General Surgery.

The clinic will also include the services of general surgeons Jeremy Rossaak and Mark Omundsen, gynaecologist Brad Chittenden (all of Tauranga), Auckland-based nephrologist David Voss and Hamilton-based gastroenterologist Frank Weilert. All take a minimally invasive approach to treatment with state-of-the-art techniques.

Dr Gilling applauded Expertscape's approach to individual and hospital rankings by the patient's condition.

The Expertscape medical search and ranking solution uses objective algorithms to identify the most knowledgeable and experienced doctors and medical institutions across many specific topics.

"These rankings by disease process are unique and of much more value to patients as they cope with the confusing and often mysterious area of their personal health," he said.
