Sirens will sound around Wanganui tomorrow night from 6pm to let residents know food-drive collectors are in the neighbourhood.
The annual collection to stock the City Mission foodbank usually provides enough supplies to stock the shelves for six months.
"We will need to collect that much this year and hopefully more because we've had a 20 per cent increase in demand this year," said foodbank co-ordinator Linda Taumoeanga, pictured above with Brian Cadogan, from Wanganui South Rotary, who has been involved with the food drive since it began around 20 years ago. Wanganui Collegiate students and other volunteers will head out in vehicles supplied by local businesses. Canned food, toiletry and laundry items are particularly welcome, but all packaged and non-perishable food is accepted.
Residents who will be out are asked to leave donations with their neighbours, and anyone who wants to help out or misses the collection can call the City Mission on 06 3452139.
