Every three hours a Kiwi man dies from a potentially preventable illness, so maybe it's about time for a check-up.
Wanganui men can head into Unichem Whanganui Pharmacy next month for free Men's Health Pit Stop Checks during this year's Men's Health Week (June 9-15).
During June men nationwide can visit their local Life, Unichem or Amcal pharmacies for a check, where they can check their blood pressure and talk to a pharmacist about which screening tools are appropriate.
For the awareness week, men are also encouraged to go to www.menshealthweek.co.nz and complete the What's Your Score online survey.
In figures gathered from the Mental Health Foundation and the Ministry of Health, Men's Health Week organisers show:
1 in 8 New Zealand men will experience serious depression during their lifetime.
In New Zealand, the suicide rate for men is 3 times that of women.
1 in 10 NZ men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime.
In 2005-2007, male life expectancy at birth was 79.0 years for non-Maori and 70.4 years for Maori.
Maori men are 1.5 times more likely to be current smokers than men in the total population.
