Police are searching for an overdue tramper in Tararua Forest Park, Wairarapa.

A police spokesperson said they were contacted last night by someone who was "concerned about a man who had not returned from overnight tramp".

"Essentially this morning we got police search and rescue teams out in the Tararua Forest Park to see what they can find out basically," the spokesperson said.

"That's where we're at at this stage - police have deployed search teams to the huts to see if they can find this chap."

It is believed the man was tramping by himself in the vicinity of Alpha Hut and was expected to return to the Waiohine Gorge campsite yesterday.

Police have not released any more details on the man at this stage.

"We encourage anyone who has any information or if they had met up with this guy on the weekend, to let police know."
