A woman has been flown to hospital by helicopter after she was injured in a head-on crash north of Wellington this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the southbound section of State Highway One through Paraparaumu on the Kapiti Coast about 1.40pm after two vehicle collided outside the busy Coastlands Shopping Centre turning bay.

One vehicle appears to have been driving on the wrong side of the road.

A police spokesman said one woman was suffering from chest injuries and it was understood she had been flown to hospital in a helicopter.

One lane of the two-lane southbound section of road was still closed off shortly before 3pm.

A Fire Service spokesman said fire crews were called to the scene but they had now left as nobody was trapped.

A couple of people were injured, he said.
