Hamilton Police are appealing for witnesses following the daytime robbery of two Chinese tourists.
Detective Sergeant Nigel Keall said a 60-year-old Chinese woman was walking in the Hamilton Gardens with her husband about 3pm yesterday when they were confronted by two men who had been following them.
"Both of the offenders were described as being dark skinned with one shirtless with a large tattoo on his back. One of the offenders was armed with a knife which he used to cut the woman's shirt and then cut away a money belt worn around her waist," said Mr Keall.
"The offenders then fled the scene on foot along the River Walkway towards Hamilton's CBD."
While this type of attack was rare in Hamilton, it sent the wrong message about New Zealand, Keall said.
