Tough Kids are back

Waimarino's Tough Kid competition is back for a second year.

The June 3 event returns after its success last year when more than 200 children from about 10 schools flocked to the Raetihi Showgrounds to compete in the 1.5km obstacle course challenge.

It's the latest addition to the Tough Kid series, which sees Year 3-8 schoolchildren competing for placings across several categories, including toughest kid and toughest school team.

The prize is the Sport Whanganui Toughest School Trophy.

The event is organised by Sport Whanganui and this year is hosted in partnership with National Park School. Sport Whanganui's events manager Rachel O'Connor says it's expected to be even more popular this year.

"Registration packs have gone out to schools and with Friday, May 27 as the entry closing date, they need to be quick to sign up to take part.

"Tough Kid caters for children of all abilities and focuses on helping grow their confidence and encouraging them to get active in a fun, safe environment. "This year's exciting challenge will feature the favourites, including the giant inflatable runway, the tyre 'mountains' and the hay bale obstacles."

The event attracts participants from the Ruapehu, National Park and Taumarunui areas.
