Rangitikei knitters are doing it in public for June's World Wide Knit, and anyone interested in joining the group is welcome to bring their needles.
Knitters in Finland, Bulgaria, Ireland, South Africa, China, America, England and Marton are among the 700 events knitting together for the June event that starts on
Saturday and finishes on the June 19.
The Marton Knatty Knitters now number 33 and are in the second year of the World Wide Knit in Public event.
Knatty Knitter Lynne Sheriden says the event is to bring the "solitary" knitters together in a public event with knitting planned in shop windows and displays of their garments knitted from donated wool.
The worldwide event was started in 2005 and began as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other's company.
The Knatty Knitters' opening event will be held at Marton's Edale Home on June 12 and the closing event on June 19.
Mrs Sheriden said the Knatty Knitters received a monthly newsletter, The Knitting Pattern, during the knitting season.
"By knitting together we all get the chance to have a good catch-up with friends. Everyone has a story to tell about their different styles of knitting, favourite patterns and ideas to share."
Mrs Sheriden was 5 or 6 years old when her father taught her to knit.
It is this timeless craft that has kept her knitting for her family of four and now her grandchildren.
Mrs Sheriden said baby clothes were special.
Baby singlets, little jackets, socks, bootees and scarves are among the items that have been knitted, and at the end of the month, all handknits will be sold through the Opportunity Shop in High St.
The Knitting in May group went to Taihape for an afternoon of knitting, and the next excursion will be on June 26 to Flat Hills Cafe on State Highway 1, north of Ohingaiti from 11.45am-3.30pm.
For more information about the Knatty Knitters contact Lynne on 06 327 5980 or lynne.s@xtra.co.nz.
Public knitting events:
June 12: Snippers window display of garments knitted and dyed by members.
June 12, 1.30-4pm: Edale Home knitting afternoon, gold coin donation and plate of food for afternoon tea.
June 13-17: Maggie May's shop hours for window knitting where a few comfortable chairs will be provided.
June 19, 1.30pm-4pm: Edale Home knitting afternoon, gold coin donation and plate of food for afternoon tea.
