The 11- to 17-year-olds are in for a "big young smash" show when JGeek and the Geeks roll into Whanganui for their party-rock dance party on Saturday night.
Group leader Jermaine Leef says their metro-Maori electro-craze fuses haka and Japanese Harajuku [style] with an electrifying performance that will take their audience
on a journey through 80s Nintendo games, heavy metal, cartoons, different genres and different decades.
Their Geek performance is a social commentary of their "Maoridom lives in the metro cities", and a fusion of what each one brings to the Geeks from their different rohe, says Jermaine.
"We have kapa haka backgrounds, love performing in the parks and swim and hunt and get out and row.
"Our training comes from the Mother herself," they say, referring to the Earth, and their six-packs, which show dedication to their artform.
JGeek and the Geeks are in the top five online acts with a million hits on YouTube and a resume which lists corporates, John Key and performances around the upcoming Rugby World Cup.
The alcohol- and drug-free dance party for 11- to 17-year-olds will be held on Saturday night in the Wanganui Memorial Conference and Convention Centre.
Tickets $10 from Kakahu Taonga and Cheapskates.
JGeek and the Geeks' dance workshop, Sunday 9am-10.30am, YMCA Studio, Wicksteed St, 11-17 years, $10.
