Buying Papa Cliff cafe on State Highway 1 in Mangaweka was not an easy decision initially for owner Shaz Grayson.

But she used to live in Mangaweka "and as I thought about it suddenly the idea of starting a business here really appealed to me".

Not only did Shaz have the strong feeling she was going to make it work, she was going to make it "really great".

"It's like I saw how good it could be and since we bought the business here has quadrupled."

An electric car charger has even been installed in the car park.

Shaz said the company Charge Net NZ had installed the charger in the front car park because they thought Mangaweka was a good stop-off point, especially outside a cafe.
Shaz is no stranger to hard work. She's cooked for shearers, was a rousie and has been a barmaid.

"When you cook for shearers it better be good otherwise they'll chuck it back at you and say 'what sort of muck do you call that'. So you learn fast."

Her burgers have already gained a hot reputation as the best for miles. A big favourite is her ManBurger - a towering double-pattied burger chock full of cheese, salad "everything but the kitchen sink".

Even though opening is 8am, customers often start pulling in and knocking on the door at 7am hoping she'll make them a coffee and have some food on the go.

Truckies are pulling in frequently now because the word is out.

Last weekend was huge surprise, she said.

On Sunday by lunchtime the queue ran from the counter out the door and around the car park.

"It was unbelievable and even though we told them there would be a wait they said it was worth it."

Birthday parties and special morning teas have been popular and there are regular bookings.

"I reckon that feeling I had was right, we're doing okay but well do better."
