The Conservation Department is asking people driving in the Tongariro National Park area to watch out for kiwi scurrying across the road after one was killed on a road at Raurimu, near National Park, on Thursday night.
They are widely separated from each other, and will travel a long way
to meet others they hear calling at night. They can look a bit like a possum on the road, or like a "furry ball", Tongariro kiwi ranger Jenny Hayward said.
Drivers are asked to take notice of kiwi road signs and slow down when they see them.
