Flying the flag for traditional best of British extravaganza

Robert Gaskin is breaking new ground by stepping into the role of director for the upcoming Last Night of the Proms.

Last Night of the Proms, a Rotary Club of Wanganui Daybreak production, will be performed at the Wanganui Royal Opera House on October 18.

Mr Gaskin promises a lavish production, with more than 100 performers on stage.

These include a mass choir of singers from Wanganui, Taihape and Taumarunui, Brass Wanganui, City of Wanganui Highland Pipe Band, dancers from Sharyn Underwood School of Dance, and soloists Jennifer Little and Charlotte Rose Rendell.

"The Opera House will be decorated in red, white and blue, and members of the audience should feel free to dress in the same colours," Mr Gaskin said.

The traditional Proms favourites will be there, but there will also be a Wanganui flavour to the show.

"The audience will be expected to participate - and there will be surprises," he said.

Mr Gaskin has been involved with previous Proms events, as part of the production team, but this is his directorial debut.

"I've worked closely with directors before, so I do know something about the role.

"I'm enjoying it so far - it has its own trials and tribulations but it's also enjoyable."

Representatives from the British High Commission in Wellington will be attending the performance.
