Pat Williams and Eris Walker with a 1921 children's choir shield they rediscovered in 2013.

There was a new award presented at the Whanganui competitions this year and recipient Sharyn Wylie says she was very honoured by it.

The Eris Walker Memorial Trophy - Spirit of the Competition was donated by her family and presented by her son Shane Hobman on October 12.

Mrs Walker died in Hospice Whanganui on August 9 after serving as president of the Wanganui Competitions Society and stage manager at the school holiday dance and music competitions for many years, having joined the committee in 1998.

Mrs Wylie said everyone worked together so that the first dance competition without Mrs Walker would not have to be cancelled.

"It was a team effort," she said.

"We were all thinking of Eris."

Mrs Walker, who was 72, worked tirelessly to plan the competitions, worked backstage and even made meals for the judges, said Mrs Wylie.

"Because the trophy was for someone who embraced the spirit of the competition, they said it didn't have to be presented to a competitor."
