The Whanganui Film Society's screening on Monday night is Theeb, the first film by Oxford-born, Jordan-based director Naji Abu Nowar.
Shot in the Wadi Rum desert near where Lawrence of Arabia was filmed, it depicts the same era in history - WW1 - yet from a
new perspective.
A young, watchful Bedouin boy is obliged to guide a British soldier through the desert. The film was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Oscar in 2016 and was described as "a classic adventure film of the best kind" by Variety.
The Toronto Star said "gorgeously shot in Jordan's Wadi Rum by cinematographer Wolfgang Thaler, writer-director Naji Abu Nowar crafts something more than a coming-of-age story as Theeb, whose name means 'wolf', finds deception and death in the desert among revolutionaries, bandits and opportunists."
