The Bastia Hill Water Tower is shedding concrete, but the structure is not undermined.
Wanganui District Council has confirmed the spalling (splintering and chipping) of concrete from the tower is only coming from hand railings.
A spokeswoman said the council was waiting for a report on repair options, which would be acted
on as soon as it was received.
"A report on repair options and costs is expected in the next two weeks," she said.
The council has cordoned off a large area around the base of the tower to keep people away from falling debris.
The spalling of concrete has occured as a result of "normal ageing", she said. The Bastia Hill Water Tower is nearly 85 years old, having opened in 1927.
Water is pumped from the Ikitara Rd pump station to the tower, which provides water to Bastia and Durie hill residents at a pressure that meets domestic and firefighting requirements. The council said the tower's function has not been affected.
