Arts review winners announced

The 2017 Belton, Smith & Associates Ltd - Whanganui Arts Review prize winners were announced at the exhibition opening last Friday night.

Andrea du Chatenier was the winner of $2000 Open Award and Brit Bunkley, Amy Blackburn and Frances Stachl each recieved $500 Highly Commended Awards.

Winners in other categories were: Claudine Kitson - Central City Pharmacy Merit Award, Emma Camden - Friends of the Sarjeant Gallery Merit Award, Jodi Clark - Rivercity Picture Framers Ltd Merit Award, Peter Ireland - Recaffeinate Merit Award, Prue Hyland - Renata's Art & Framing Merit Award, Andrea Gardner - Ceramic Lounge Merit Award, Glen Hutchins - WHMilbank Gallery Merit Award, Tom Turner - The Whanganui River Traders Merit Award, Gaynor Mulholland - Wanganui Garden Services Ltd Merit Award, Abishai Dohare - DUB.DEE.SEE. Youth Recognition Award.

The winners in each category were selected by: editor of Small Bore Books and former senior curator at the Dowse Art Museum, Emma Bugden, former Tylee Cottage artist in residence, Glen Hayward, and curator and public programmes manager at the Sarjeant, Greg Donson.

Judging the awards for the 2017 Review was Kim Paton, director of Objectspace in Auckland.

Gallery redevelopment officer Vivien Lindsay, said the scope of work submitted is impressive.

"The Sarjeant staff are thrilled to host this event in our temporary surrounds and we wish to thank all of the artists who have taken part in this year's event - proof once again that Whanganui is indeed a thriving centre of arts and culture."

The Arts Review is on display at Sarjeant on the Quay until 14 May.
