New business Smashclays Wanganui has got off to a flying start.
Smashclays is a clay bird shooting range, with a purpose-built six-gun stand on a farm at Kai Iwi.
Clint Skedgwell, of Hunting & Fishing Wanganui, set up the operation in November and has already hosted about eight groups, including a child's birthday party, with bookings into early 2018.
"We already had all the gear in the shop so it was easy to set up but I had to look for the right venue and be mindful of the neighbours," Mr Skedgwell said.
"The stand is on my mate Lindsay Horrocks' farm where participants shoot into an open gully.
"It's different to gun club shooting which has set clays and set scoring. This is less formatted and matched to people's ability, from those who have never shot before to experienced shooters. We have different sized shotguns and can cater for everyone.
"It's a different dynamic for team building, staff dos, stag and hen parties and kids' parties."
The operation can take six to 30 shooters in one session, with everyone having to sign a stringent health and safety plan before they can enter the property. Sessions are supervised by a firearms licence holder so participants do not need to have a firearms licence.
More information and booking details are available on the Smashclays Wanganui Facebook page or at Hunting & Fishing's store in Carlton Ave.
