A severed cable led to much of Wanganui being without electricity for about 40 minutes yesterday afternoon.
Powerco's acting network operations manager Dean Stevenson said a contractor accidentally cut through the 33kV Powerco just after 2pm.
Around 4000 properties lost power, including in Durie Hill, Fordell, Kaitoke, Kauangaroa, Mangamahu, Okoia, Whangaehu, Gonville, and central Wanganui.
Traffic lights at the intersections of Guyton St and Wilson St, St Hill St and Guyton St, and Taupo Quay and Victoria Ave were not working during the power outage. However, businesses in Victoria Ave did not lose power.
