Wanganui residents are dragging the chain when it comes to getting into kerbside recycling.
In fact, a waste adviser has told the Wanganui District Council that less than 100 households are actively into recycling on a regular basis, using the two private waste collection companies operating in the city.
In an update on kerbside recycling, Stuart Hylton told the council that greater "selling" of the concept of kerbside recycling was needed if that was to change. But he said getting more households into the habit created other problems.
Councils are obliged to have a waste management strategy and in this regard Wanganui has been involved in setting up the resource recovery centre in Maria Place.
Mr Hylton said the problem was caused by "co-mingling" because not all kerbside collections sort out the recyclable material before it gets to the recovery centre.
