Genea Huijs' head feels a little lighter but her deed will go to help someone in need.

The 8-year-old from Waverley had the hair she had been growing for 18 months chopped off on Saturday to be made into a wig for cancer patients. Hairdresser Suki Suzuki-Gollan from Blades Hair Salon had the honour of removing the locks.

Her mother Katrina said several family members came along to watch her get her hair cut in Wanganui on Saturday and said they were all proud of her initiative.

About 35 centimetres was cut and sent off to Pantene as part of its Beautiful Lengths campaign. Genea made the decision to donate her hair herself and she has even inspired a friend to do the same.
