Five Wanganui East churches were packed by an estimated 500 people in the annual Procession of the Cross yesterday, Father Brian Carmine said.
The crowd of Christians remembered the day of Jesus' death with a short service in each church, starting at St James in Helmore St and ending at Wanganui East Baptist Church. Between churches they walked in procession, following a cross.
The crowd included many white heads, but there were also lots of children. The morning was sunny and warm, with little traffic.
The procession has taken place for at least 15 years, Father Brian said. It's organised by the Wanganui East community.
"Anyone and everyone can come. And it never rains, they tell me."
