"She is the best present I could have got on New Year's day," Dreenagha Katene of Waverley said, giving her newborn daughter, Eve Rahera Check, a kiss.
Born at Wanganui Hospital's maternity unit on New Year's Day at 4.08am, Ms Katene said she started getting mild contractions about 11.45pm on New Year's Eve and her and partner Roydon Check came down to Wanganui, but it wasn't until after 3am the contractions were such she was certain she would give birth shortly.
"The scan birth date was for January 3, but I thought it could be December 30."
Her third child, the baby is also her third daughter, and, after being discharged from hospital yesterday, Ms Katene headed straight for home to bake a birthday cake for her second daughter, Tessa, who turned eight yesterday.
"Many thanks to my midwife and all the staff at the maternity unit and Wanganui Hospital."
Eve was one of two babies born at the maternity unit on New Year's Day. The other was a boy, at 9.30am.
