One of the winners of the McDowell's Professionals Christmas Lights Trail has been spreading the Christmas spirit far and wide in the hope of improving Christmas for those less fortunate.
At the Fairy Springs Rd mini golf course, employee Fiona MacGregor thought it would be a good idea to spreadthe Christmas spirit by not only hanging lights but also by getting people to bring a donation in for Women's Refuge, so they can walk through and see the display. "We are offering free admission from 8.30pm to 11pm for people to come and see the lights. We are asking for a non-perishable food donation," Mrs MacGregor said.
The business was one of 12 winners announced this week, that each won a $250 prize.
Mrs MacGregor said she told the five workers, who had put in a lot of effort, that they could have $50 each.
"I was surprised when they came back to me and said they wanted to give the money to Women's Refuge."
From there, they contacted Countdown to get $250 worth of food vouchers for Women's Refuge and Countdown thought it was such a wonderful idea that the supermarket matched it, bringing a total of $500 in food vouchers.
"First and foremost, it's about having something magical for the kids and people of Rotorua to really get them in the Christmas spirit.
"Secondly, Women's Refuge gets pretty desperate at this time of the year and it's really important to me that we give to someone in need," Mrs MacGregor said.
